Moscow is a potent combination of centuries of history and all the wonders of the modern day, mingling together in unique and vibrant ways for all to enjoy. The 800-year-old capital of Russia has enough to keep visitors busy for months on end. If this is your first visit to Moscow, here are 5 of the most incredible places to check out during your stay.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

The image the average US citizen might think of when they think of Russia, with towering, colorful domes, comes largely from the colorful and gorgeous St. Basil’s Cathedral. Commissioned in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible himself, this cathedral was so beautiful that the architect who built it was ordered to be blinded so he could never surpass the design of this immaculate, glistening cathedral that persist to this day.

Red Square

At the heart of Moscow lies Red Square, which could easily be considered the most visited attraction in the city. This cobblestone-lined town square, once a market teeming with traders, is now packed with gorgeous architecture and history. Many famous landmarks such as the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and more can be found around Red Square.

Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

This Moscow museum features the largest collection of foreign art in the city, and is made up of three branches. The galleries contain everything from masterpieces from the ancient and classical world, to Renaissance pieces that have been carefully preserved. You can even find many works by the Dutch masters! The main building of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is packed with world-renowned artists, including Rembrandt, Botticelli, Tiepolo, and many more. Next to the main building, in The Gallery of European & American Art, you can find a massive collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works to enjoy.

The Kremlin

The Kremlin, one of the most famous spots in Moscow, is also the largest active fortress in Europe today. Behind 2.2 kilometers of wall, you can find five squares to explore, 20 towers, several buildings, and even the world’s largest bell and cannon. History lovers and those who are simply curious will get a week’s worth of attractions out of the Kremlin alone.

GUM

GUM, Russia’s biggest department store, is much different from the department stores we might think of here in the US. Inside this beautiful, sprawling building that is nearing its 130th birthday are over 200 boutiques to satisfy your itch to go shopping. If shopping isn’t your thing, that’s okay: the glass roof of the arcade provides a wonderful view that faces Red Square, and there are a variety of eateries to enjoy.

Before you go to Russia, you’re going to need a visa, and that’s where we come in. Call Texas Tower Houston at 713-874-1420 and let us help you with your US passport and Russia visa needs today. For more information on what you need for your Russia visa, click here.

Cuban food is delicious and flavorful blend of Spanish, Native American, African, and Caribbean cuisines that, like most Latin American cuisines, isn’t particularly spicy, but can be made spicier with some hot sauce at any paladares (privately-owned restaurants). Better still, the price at these restaurants for the quality food you get is very enticing: the average plate is much cheaper than at state-owned restaurants, coming in at around $3-$10 per plate. Portions are also often very large and perfect for sharing with your family, friends, and other travel companions.

Have you been considering a trip to Cuba and wanted to learn more about the cuisine before you go? Here are 9 excellent Cuban meals to get your mouth watering:

  1. Pulpeta
You can think of pulpeta like a Cuban spin on meatloaf. It’s well-seasoned mincemeat and ham mixed together with hard-boiled eggs stuffed inside. Rather than baking, pulpeta is generally cooked on the stove.
  2. Ropa vieja
Ropa vieja (lit. “old clothes”) is the national dish of Cuba, which is interesting considering beef isn’t terribly common in Cuba outside of resorts and restaurants that cater to tourists. This heart stew is filled with tomatoes, onions, and tender beef chunks that slowly cooked until they are easily shredded.
  3. Paella
Cuban paella is much like its Spanish cousin in composition, with its saffron rice, meats, and seafood cooked in a large, shallow pan, and is often filled with ham, chorizo, chicken, shrimp, lobster, scallops, and mussels.
  4. Ajiaco
Ajiaco is another wonderfully hearty stew that has everything but the kitchen sink! This delicious Cuban stew has a little something for everyone: pumpkin, potatoes, plantains, corn, malanga, meats, spices, tomato paste, lemon juice, and even beer to add depth of flavor.
  5. Corn on the cob
Cuba’s take on corn on the cob is both simple and delicious. First, the corn cobs are grilled before being rolled in mouthwatering cotija cheese, sprinkled with chili powder and garnished with a few drops of lime juice.
  6. Tostones
Tostones are one of those foods that are found all throughout the Caribbean under different names depending where you are. This addictive dish is made using thick slices of plantains which are fried, pressed on to form something closer to a patty, and then fried again.
  7. Congrí
This dish, simply rice and black beans cooked with garlic, oil, and spices, is found with pretty much any authentic cocina criolla (lit. “Creole cooking”), and is also referred to as moros y cristianos. It’s a delightful and satisfying dish with heart protein and flavorful rice that is the perfect accompaniment to any main dish.
  8. Arroz con leche
Arroz con leche is a simple yet satisfying rice pudding made with rice, milk, sugar, and cinnamon that is the perfect comfort food for any occasion. The soft, sweet, creamy texture hits every high note a dessert should have.
  9. Cazuela de plátano
This decadent dessert is made with bananas, raisins, pecans, butter, and brown sugar, and is an excellent dessert for lactose intolerant travelers. It’s the perfect combination of sweet, buttery, smooth and crisp to satisfy any sweet tooth.

If you’re hungry to try some amazing Cuban paladares, you’re going to need a passport and visa first. Fortunately, we can help you get both quickly and easily. Contact Texas Tower Houston at 713-874-1420 and we will always be ready to assist you with your passport and visa needs. With all states given the reprieve to comply with identification requirements, having a passport for travel within the United States still isn’t a thing. In the future, that may change. In the meantime, you still need your passport for traveling outside the United States. Here are some of the most common passport issues we see daily and how to handle them.

Your passport is within 6 months of expiring.
You might as well consider your passport expired if there is less than six months left until the expiration date. Go ahead and renew your passport.

The country you’re entering requires a blank page in your passport for stamping upon entry, and you do not have the blank pages available.
Until January 2016, you could add pages to your passport. Now you need to go through the renewal process to add pages, no matter how much extra time is left until expiration.

Remember! No glasses in passport photos now
