This massive temple was forgotten for hundreds of years, because much of the population moved to eastern Java due to volcanic eruptions, but was rediscovered in the 19th century and is now one of the main draws in all of Java. If you visit at dawn, you can expect a torch-lit climb up the temple to get a breathtaking view. If you want to experience more traditional Javanese history and culture, Borobudur is near Yogyakarta, a city that is as beautiful as it is historic.
The Gili Islands are arguably one of the most famous landmarks in Lombok, which is an incredibly popular spot for backpackers and tourists alike. The Gilis’ beaches on par with those Bali and the waters offer great opportunities for diving and snorkeling. If you love turtles, you can even go snorkeling with them at a turtle sanctuary!
