Back-to-School Travel Checklist for Students Studying Abroad

Heading off to study in another country this fall? 🌍✈️ Before you start dreaming about your new dorm views or international snacks, make sure your travel paperwork is in order. A little planning now means fewer headaches later.

Here’s your back-to-school travel checklist if you’re a U.S. student going abroad:

✅ Check Your Passport Expiration Date

Many countries require your passport to be valid at least six months beyond your return date. Renew it now if you’re cutting it close—especially since renewals can take weeks (unless expedited).

✅ Apply for a Student Visa (If Required)

Don’t assume your student ID or admission letter is enough. Many countries require a student visa before entry, and the application process can take time. Double-check the rules with your destination country’s embassy or consulate.

✅ Make Extra Copies of Key Docs

Scan your passport, visa, flight itinerary, and school admission letter. Save digital copies to the cloud, email them to yourself, and print a few hard copies for your luggage—just in case.

✅ Check Vaccine & Health Requirements

Some countries require proof of certain vaccinations or health forms. Get those documents now, especially if you’ll need a health check, COVID test, or international health insurance letter.

✅ Keep a Backup Plan

Missed your visa appointment? Lost passport? Life happens. Know where the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate is in your host country—and save their emergency contact info.
