Brazil is one of those destinations that sits on a lot of travel bucket lists. What catches many U.S. travelers off guard, though, is that Brazil requires a visa for American citizens visiting the country.
As of April 10, 2025, U.S. passport holders traveling to Brazil for tourism or business are required to obtain a visa before arrival. Brazil now uses an eVisa system for most short-term travelers from the United States.
The good news is that the process is much easier than the old consulate appointment system many travelers remember from years ago. Most travelers can complete the application online without mailing in their passport or visiting a Brazilian consulate in person.
According to the official Brazilian government information provided through Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U.S. citizens apply through the authorized eVisa portal managed by VFS Global. The application generally requires:
- A valid U.S. passport
- A digital passport-style photo
- A color scan of the passport information page
- Payment of the visa fee
- Basic travel and personal information
For most travelers, the Brazil eVisa is intended for tourism, business visits, or transit purposes. Once approved, the visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period.
One detail travelers sometimes miss is passport validity. The U.S. Department of State notes that your passport must be valid on the date of entry into Brazil, and you should also have at least one blank passport page available for entry stamps.
Timing matters too. Waiting until the week before your trip is usually not a great idea when international visas are involved. Processing times can vary depending on demand, document quality, or whether additional information is requested. Travelers heading to Brazil for major events, conferences, Carnival season, or school breaks should start the process well ahead of departure.
