Child Passport Requirements: What Parents Need to Know
If you’re planning international travel with your child, one of the most important things to know is this:
All minors — regardless of age — must have a valid passport to travel internationally.
Yes, that includes newborns.
Whether you’re traveling for vacation, visiting family abroad, or taking a school or sports trip, children cannot travel internationally using a parent’s passport. Each child must have their own.
Do Babies and Toddlers Need a Passport?
Yes. The U.S. Department of State requires all U.S. citizens, including infants, to have a passport book for international air travel.
Even if your child is just weeks old, a passport is mandatory for:
- International flights
- Cruises that require passports
- Travel to countries that require a passport for entry
There are no age exemptions.
Important Child Passport Rules Parents Should Know
Applying for a child’s passport is different than renewing an adult’s passport. Here are the key requirements:
1️⃣ Both Parents Must Appear
For children under 16, both parents or legal guardians must appear in person when applying. This is a federal safeguard against child abduction.
If one parent cannot attend, additional documentation is required.
2️⃣ No Mail-In Renewals for Kids
Children’s passports cannot be renewed by mail.
A new application must be submitted in person.
3️⃣ Child Passports Are Valid for 5 Years
Unlike adult passports (valid for 10 years), passports issued to minors under 16 are only valid for five years.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Child’s Passport?
Routine passport processing can take several weeks.
If you have urgent travel plans, expedited passport services may be necessary. Keep in mind:
- Travel dates often must be within a specific window
- Emergency appointments are limited
- Documentation must be complete to avoid delays
Planning early is always best — especially during peak travel seasons like summer and holidays.
Planning International Travel with Children
Before booking flights, confirm:
✔️ Your child has a valid passport
✔️ The passport will not expire within 6 months of travel (some countries require this)
✔️ You understand visa requirements for your destination
Missing paperwork can delay or cancel travel plans.
