Tanzania is currently at a level 2 “exercise increased caution” travel advisory and is open for US citizens to travel to. Tanzania requires a travel visa, along with a valid US passport for US citizens to enter. It is important to note that if your passport is within 6 months of the expiration date, most countries will simply deny it.
