You’ve triple-checked your expiration date. You’ve got your visa. Your bags are packed. But did you sign your passport?
It sounds like a minor detail—but forgetting to sign your passport can cause major problems. In some countries, an unsigned passport is considered invalid and could get you held up at immigration or even denied entry.
Why the Signature Matters
Your passport is an official legal document. That signature on page 3? It’s your agreement to its terms and confirmation that you are the rightful holder. Without it, some countries treat the passport as incomplete or unauthorized.
Airlines and border agents are trained to check for that signature—especially in high-security countries like Israel, South Korea, and the UAE.
Where to Sign
Flip to the page that says “Signature of Bearer.” That’s where your John Hancock goes. Use blue or black ink, and don’t write outside the box. If your child is too young to sign, a parent can print the child’s name and sign their own below it.
Already Traveling?
If you’re already abroad and just realized your passport is unsigned—don’t panic. Sign it immediately. In most cases, border agents are just looking for completion. But if your signature doesn’t match your ID or boarding pass, you might face additional screening.
