ETIAS: What Americans Must Know Before Visiting Europe

A quick guide for U.S. travelers on Europe’s upcoming ETIAS travel authorization—what it is, when it starts, and how to prepare.

If you’re dreaming of a European getaway in 2025, there’s one new travel requirement to keep on your radar: ETIAS. Short for the European Travel Information and Authorization System, ETIAS will soon become mandatory for U.S. citizens visiting most European countries within the Schengen Zone.

The good news? It’s not a visa. Think of ETIAS as a quick security pre-check that links electronically to your passport. Once approved, it’s valid for three years and allows multiple short stays of up to 90 days per 180-day period.

Applications will be online and should take only a few minutes to complete. Travelers will provide passport details, answer simple background questions, and pay a small fee. In most cases, approval arrives within minutes.

Although ETIAS hasn’t officially launched yet, it’s wise to keep your passport up-to-date. You’ll need a valid passport with at least six months before expiration to apply.

Europe’s historic cities, cozy cafés, and holiday markets are waiting—make sure you’re ready when ETIAS goes live.
