How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport Right Now?
As of mid-2025, standard passport processing takes 8–11 weeks. Expedited service takes 5–7 weeks. Urgent same-day service is available in emergencies at select passport agencies.
That’s the short answer—but it’s always best to check the most current timeline before you apply. Here’s what you need to know.
Standard Processing Times
Routine service currently takes 8 to 11 weeks, depending on demand and season. This timeline starts when your application is received, not when it’s mailed.
Expedited Processing Times
If you need it faster, expedited service is available. As of this update, the expedited timeline is 5 to 7 weeks. If you want it even faster, reaching out to a third-party service can get your US passport in days.
Emergency or Urgent Travel
For life-or-death emergencies or urgent international travel within 14 days, you may qualify for same-day service at a regional passport agency. Proof of travel and appointment confirmation are required.
