How to Renew Your Passport in 2025: What’s Changed and What Hasn’t

If your passport is expiring soon, now’s the time to get ahead of the rush. Passport renewal in 2025 is mostly familiar—but there are a few updates to keep in mind that could speed up or slow down the process, depending on how you apply.

What Hasn’t Changed

You can still renew your U.S. passport by mail if:

  • Your passport is undamaged

  • It was issued within the last 15 years

  • You were at least 16 years old when it was issued

  • It’s in your current name (or you have legal proof of a name change)

You’ll need Form DS-82, a new photo, and payment by check or money order. Processing times remain longer during peak travel season—so apply early if you can.

What’s New in 2025

The big change: online passport renewal is back—but it’s limited. After a successful pilot in 2023–2024, the U.S. Department of State has rolled out online renewal again for a limited group of eligible applicants. You’ll need to create an account at MyTravelGov, meet eligibility criteria, and pay online. Slots fill quickly, so act fast if you want to try the digital route.

Also new: some acceptance facilities now require appointments for passport photos, especially during summer. Call ahead or check local post office websites before you go.

What to Expect

Standard processing still takes 6–8 weeks. Expedited service is 2–3 weeks—if your paperwork is error-free and you include the right fees. Any missing details can delay your application.
