How to Replace a Lost Passport While Traveling Abroad

If you lose your U.S. passport while abroad, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate immediately. They can issue an emergency replacement so you can return home.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do:

Step 1: Report the Loss
Visit the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in the country you’re visiting.

Call ahead to check hours and requirements.

Fill out Form DS-64 to report your lost or stolen passport.

Step 2: Apply for a New Passport
Complete Form DS-11 (passport application).

Bring proof of identity if possible (driver’s license, copy of lost passport, etc.).

Bring passport photos that meet U.S. standards.

Pay the applicable fees (most embassies accept credit cards).

Step 3: Provide Travel Proof
Show your travel itinerary, plane ticket, or confirmation of return travel.

If you have urgent travel within 72 hours, mention this to request an emergency passport.

Step 4: Wait for Issuance
Emergency passports are typically issued within 1–3 business days.

These may be limited in validity and intended for immediate return travel.

You can apply for a full-validity passport upon return to the U.S.
