Lost Passport at the Airport? What to Do Before Your Flight Leaves

Few things derail a trip faster than reaching the airport and realizing your passport is missing. Whether it fell out of a bag, was left at home, or was stolen somewhere on the way, a lost passport doesn’t have to mean canceling your entire trip. Acting quickly and following a clear plan can make all the difference.

The first step is to retrace your steps while you’re still in the terminal. TSA checkpoints, airline counters, restroom counters, and boarding areas are common places passports get left behind. Airports also have centralized Lost & Found departments that receive items turned in by other travelers or staff. The sooner you check, the better your chances.

If the passport can’t be found, notify airport police or the airport’s security office. Reporting the loss is essential because a missing passport is treated as a potential identity theft risk. After filing a report, contact your airline. Some carriers will allow you to move your flight to a later time or day without penalty if the delay is due to a lost identity document.

You’ll also need to report the passport as lost or stolen through the appropriate Department of State channels. At this point, travelers usually assume the trip is over—but replacement options exist. An expeditor can often help you obtain a new passport on an emergency basis, depending on your departure window and document availability.

Having digital copies of your passport, itinerary, and ID can speed things up. It’s also helpful to know your passport number, though it’s not required for filing the loss report.
