Planning an International Trip? Check These Travel Documents First

Planning an international trip usually starts with the fun stuff. You compare airfare, look at hotels, read about local attractions, and start thinking about everything you want to do once you arrive.

Before you get too far into planning, take a few minutes to go through a simple travel documents checklist. It's one of those things that's easy to overlook until it suddenly becomes a problem.

Start with your passport.

Make sure it's in good condition, has blank pages available, and won't expire before or during your trip. Some countries also require your passport to remain valid for several months beyond your departure date, so it's worth checking the entry requirements for wherever you're traveling.

Next, find out whether you'll need a visa or an electronic travel authorization. Some countries allow Americans to enter without a visa for short visits. Others require approval before you leave home. It's much easier to learn that weeks before your trip than days before your flight.

A good travel documents checklist should also include your flight confirmations, hotel reservations, and proof of onward travel. Immigration officers in some countries may ask to see evidence that you plan to leave before your authorized stay expires.

If you're planning to drive while you're overseas, check whether you'll need an International Driving Permit. Some countries require one, while others simply recommend it. Either way, it's something that's better handled before you leave home.

It's also a good idea to keep copies of your important documents somewhere separate from the originals. If your passport is lost or stolen, having copies of your passport, driver's license, travel itinerary, and emergency contacts can make replacing everything much easier.

Travel insurance is another item that's worth considering. Most trips go exactly as planned, but delayed flights, lost luggage, and unexpected medical expenses happen every day. Having coverage can save you a lot of money and stress if something unexpected comes up.

If you're traveling with children, double-check their passports too. Child passports don't last as long as adult passports, and it's surprisingly common for parents to discover one has expired after the flights have already been booked.

A week or two before you leave, gather everything into one place. Your passport, visas if needed, airline confirmations, hotel information, insurance details, emergency contacts, and any other paperwork should all be easy to find. You don't want to spend the night before your flight wondering where you put something important.

We help travelers with passports, visas, International Driving Permits, document translations, and other travel services every day. If you're unsure whether you have everything you need before your trip, it's much easier to ask questions now than deal with surprises at the airport.

Even just a little preparation goes a long way. Working through a travel documents checklist before you travel only takes a few minutes, but it can save you from hours of frustration later. Once you know your paperwork is in order, you can get back to planning the part of the trip you've been looking forward to all along.
