What to Know Before Traveling with a Temporary Passport

If you’re facing a last-minute trip and your regular passport is lost, damaged, or expired, you might be issued a temporary passport. While it can be a lifesaver in a pinch, there are a few things you need to know before traveling with one.

What Is a Temporary Passport?

A temporary passport is a limited-validity travel document issued by the U.S. Department of State or an embassy/consulate abroad. It’s typically valid for 3 to 12 months and is meant to help travelers get home—or keep urgent plans from falling through.

Where Is It Accepted?

Not all countries accept temporary passports. Some may deny entry or require a visa, even if they normally allow U.S. passport holders visa-free access. Before booking travel, check with the consulate of your destination country to confirm whether your temporary passport will be honored.

What Are the Limitations?

  • Limited validity means it’s not good for long-term travel

  • Some visas can’t be issued to temporary passports

  • You’ll usually need to exchange it for a full-validity passport after your trip

  • It may cause delays at border checks—plan extra time at customs

How to Get One

Temporary passports are usually issued at a U.S. embassy or consulate if you’re overseas. In the U.S., you may be able to request one at a passport agency with proof of emergency travel. Bring your ID, travel itinerary, and completed paperwork (Form DS-11 if you’re applying in person).
