International Driving Permits: Everything You Need to Know
Planning to drive during your next international trip? Whether you’re renting a car in Italy, exploring Thailand by scooter, or heading out on a road trip through South Africa, you might need more than just your U.S. driver’s license. In many countries, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
An IDP is a translation of your valid driver’s license into multiple languages. It isn’t a standalone license — you must carry it along with your U.S. license. But it’s recognized by more than 150 countries, making it much easier to rent vehicles and deal with local authorities if needed.
Here’s what you should know:
-
When You Need One: Countries like Italy, Thailand, and South Africa require or strongly recommend having an IDP. Some rental companies also insist on it even if the country technically doesn’t need one.
-
How to Get One: In the U.S., IDPs are issued by AAA or AATA. You’ll need to apply before you leave the country — you cannot get one once you’re abroad. Or go now to International Driver License – Provided by Texas Tower
-
What It Covers: An IDP is valid for one year and covers private motor vehicles. It doesn’t allow you to drive commercial vehicles overseas.
-
Important Tip: Always carry your IDP and U.S. driver’s license while driving internationally. An IDP alone isn’t enough.
If international driving is part of your travel plans, getting an IDP is a smart (and sometimes legally required) move. Don’t leave it to chance — plan ahead so you can enjoy your trip without unexpected problems on the road.
