U.S. Department of State: US Passport Processing Update

As of October 14, 2020, the US Department of State was processing passport renewals and new applications, however, there is a huge backlog due to closure during the pandemic. Right now the processing times are 10-12 weeks for routine service and expedited service runs around 4-6 weeks. Emergency processing is available for life and death emergencies that require travel and through a limited number of appointments for customers who have urgent international travel in the next 72 hours (3 business days) for reasons other than a life-or-death emergency.

There is a backlog, but with the processing facilities reopened, they should be catching up in the future. Here are the latest stats:

The U.S. Department of State recommends that you research any country you are considering travel to. Conditions vary depending upon location. We continue to recommend U.S. citizens exercise caution when traveling abroad due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic.
